Trinseo’s Latex Binders for Artificial Turf – An Ingredient for Great Soccer

For artificial turf, Trinseo LIGOS™ Binders products offer safety and durability on the field and help improve properties that extend the strength and appearance of the pitch.

Many factors come into play in the production of artificial turf such as artificial playing fields as well as residential and landscape spaces. The tuft withdrawal force is only one of many criteria for a good and robust surface. In addition, turf producers must comply with specific low volatile organic compounds (VOC) industry requirements.

Trinseo is one of the few organizations able to produce latex binders for artificial turf in compliance with these specific low-VOC industry requirements for worldwide exports to Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East. Artificial turf with lower amount of VOC in indoor air helps artificial turf manufacturers achieve bigger share in the export market.

We have modified our standard product with performance-enhancing additives, as our R&D department is geared towards generating ever new innovations. The specially designed latex binders provide better wetting of the polymer, which reduces the drop in tuft lock after immersion in water test. They also offer superior Inner Tuft Lock (ITL) properties and good wetting of polypropylene backing, and enable easy processing.

Key tests and requirements for latex-based backing:

  • Immersion in hot water (European Standard EN 13744 & ISO 4919) - Surfaces for sports areas: Procedure for accelerated ageing by immersion in hot water (includes two weeks’ immersion in water at 70°C: ≥30 Newton)
  • Tuft withdrawal force (International Standard ISO 4919) - Carpets: Specification of tuft withdrawal force (an average of minimal 20 samples: ≥30 Newton; relative Standard Deviation is 25-30% (low precision)
  • Dimensional stability (EN 13746) as function of temperature and wet conditions
