Trinseo Automotive Zooming In On Car Exterior Applications at VDI Conference

Berwyn, PA and Mannheim, Germany - Tuesday, March 8, 2016

Trinseo (NYSE: TSE), the global materials company and manufacturer of plastic, latex and rubber, is set to participate in the 2016 International VDI Conference ’Plastics in Automotive Engineering.’ The annual international conference is a strategic meeting point for car manufacturers, part suppliers and material providers, allowing the material suppliers to show their innovations in the presence of the latest car models and new car applications.

This year, Trinseo Automotive will emphasize the launch of the PULSE™ XT line of PC-ABS products, aimed at providing lightweight and cost effective solutions for exterior automotive applications suitable for a variety of applications such as roof spoilers, side mirrors, mirror housings, roof bows, front grills, front bumper grills, and spoilers.

In addition, as part of the official conference program, Anis Tebib, marketing manager for Trinseo and Dr. Gérard Liraut, expert leader on polymers at Renault, will present a joint case study highlighting the development of full- thermoplastic lift-gates on Wednesday, March 9, at 11:30 am in the Musensaal.

“The PULSE™ XT series stand out with their density advantage of up to 10% versus competitive PC-PET solutions, allowing for considerable weight savings.” said Tebib. “These PC-ABS blends are meeting the latest OEM exterior material specifications and allow for high gloss exterior paintability specifications. The PULSE™ XT9215 was recently used in the first very low CLTE roof rail application. There is great market opportunity to use this solution in other automotive platforms in the future.”

Trinseo Automotive’s PULSE™ XT series key performance benefits are the following:

  • PULSE™ XT7215, in particular, provides a very low CLTE performance at easy flow and a low density of only 1.25 g/ , enabling up to 10% weight reduction for lighter parts and optimized costs
  • PULSE™ XT resins are designed for easy flow which  improves cycle time, providing enhanced  energy efficiency during the moulding cycle
  • PULSE™ XT is especially suitable for high gloss painted, premium-quality components due to the easy processability and high gloss surface finish
  • Filled PULSE™ XT products provide improved dimensional stability, with a better fit and finish to the adjacent steel parts for optimal quality

One example to be featured at VDI is the development of roof rails on the new Opel Astra Sports Tourer.

“The all-new Opel Astra Sport Tourer is based on a completely new lightweight vehicle architecture to reduce cost consumption while maintaining space offer and agility,” said Norwin van Riel, global R&D expert for Trinseo Automotive. “The PULSE™ XT9215 fits to this lightweight concept. Using our PC-ABS compound instead of painted aluminum SRG could achieve a 50% weight reduction for the new roof rails.”

With the PULSE™ XT series, Trinseo Automotive provides exterior application solutions for today and tomorrow. To experience the series and learn more about our development efforts, visit us at stand 51.
