Trinseo Sees Trend in Using Polycarbonate in Outdoor Lighting Applications

BERWYN, Pa. - Monday, October 31, 2016

Trinseo (NYSE: TSE), the global materials company and manufacturer of plastics, latex binders and synthetic rubber, has noticed a trend toward plastics for outdoor and area lighting.  Once considered an unsuitable material for outdoor lighting applications, especially for housings and enclosures, plastic is increasingly seen as a viable option because of the benefits it provides.

“OEMs and molders are recognizing that plastic, particularly polycarbonate (PC), offers them the ability to improve on lighting designs and differentiate themselves in the marketplace while also reducing costs,” said Bill Marshall, senior account manager of Trinseo’s LED Lighting business. “With polycarbonate they are able to create attractive designs—designs that were never possible with traditional materials, such as metal—and eliminate costly and time consuming secondary operations such as painting and electro-coating.” 

Polycarbonate for lighting offers:

  • Design freedom: PC can easily be fabricated into complex shapes offering designers endless possibilities for attractive and innovative designs
  • Lighter weight: the density of PC is far less than that of metal, resulting in much lighter weight parts for the same volume
  • Cost savings: Expensive secondary processes for metals such as painting and coating can be eliminated, reducing system costs. In addition, parts can be consolidated, streamlining assembly
  • Impact resistance: Transparent polycarbonate has far better impact resistance than glass resulting in reduced chance of breakage of lenses and optics made from such materials
