Trinseo’s PULSE™ AX50 Designed for the Production of High Quality Surfaces via ColorForm Technology

During K 2016, the world's premier fair for the plastics and rubber industry, Trinseo joined KraussMaffei, a leading manufacturer of injection molding machinery, reaction process machinery and automation, and PANADUR, a supplier of innovative, functional coatings, for a unique demonstration on their successful collaboration of super high and deep gloss parts for interior automotive trim applications.

Trinseo developed its innovative PC/ABS PULSE™ AX50 resin specifically for the production of the ColorForm process. One of the benefits of using the Company’s AX50 substrate is the practical impact performance of the part, which increases by more than 100% compared to incumbent technologies at room temperature. PULSE™ AX50 is ideal for time- and cost-saving multi-component injection molding technology from KraussMaffei.

Traditionally an interior trim is molded by Tiers and painted after molding the part. However, at K 2016 KraussMaffei demonstrated the production of an automotive interior decorative trim using the ColorForm Technology together with Trinseo’s PULSE™ AX50 and PANADUR's polyurea laqcuer.

Two production steps in one machine using the same tool
The ColorForm Technology allows the surface material to be introduced directly into the cavity of the tool during the injection process. The thermoplastic basic body is coated while it is still in the mold, eliminating the need for painting or coating in what is otherwise a conventional second processing step. This results in less waste as well as significantly lower material, process, and logistics costs for suppliers and OEMs alike.

There are also a number of additional material characteristics that give our customers an advantage in the development and production of advanced lightweight construction applications:

  • High resilient, durable interior applications: PULSE™ AX50 demonstrates high impact resistance at room temperature including temperatures as low as - 30°C / - 22°F
  • Adhesion properties: The adhesion properties of paint on a PULSE™ AX50 basic body remain outstanding even in the face of weather and temperature effects and UV radiation
  • Low odor and VOC emissions (-10 ppm): Meets vehicle passenger specifications of automotive manufacturers around the world
  • PULSE™ AX50’s outstanding spiral flow: Processing properties of the material enable thin-walled, lightweight parts to be produced without compromising on rigidity or dimensional stability, even with workpieces of a complex structure
