Trinseo is a global solutions provider and manufacturer of diverse materials with a focus on delivering innovative, sustainable, and value-creating products that are intrinsic to our daily lives. For more than a decade, we have worked to build a more sustainable Company in order to realize a better future for our people and the planet.
At Trinseo, value has both a tangible and intangible meaning—it is both the profits we earn as well as the impact we have on our employees and communities. We deliver value to our communities, value chain partners, stakeholders, leadership, employees, community members, and more by reducing our risk to climate change through the creation of more sustainable products with less environmental impact.
We are guided by our mission and values to deliver technology and solutions that are intrinsic to our customers’ success. As a result, we hold ourselves to the highest standards to be accountable to our customers, deliver value to our stakeholders, and treat our employees and communities with integrity and respect.
The Sustainability Business and Services (SBS) Team was established in 2021 under the leadership of CSO Francesca Reverberi to develop and oversee the Company’s sustainability roadmap and provide sustainability services to the business units. The SBS Team is focused on two critical areas of Trinseo’s sustainability roadmap: strategic implementation of decarbonization efforts across the Company, and expansion of Trinseo’s sustainable feedstocks business.
The team is responsible for oversight of each of Trinseo’s five primary Sustainability Goal categories, in coordination with each of the Goal Owners. The following highlights some of our progress reported in 2021.
Sustainable Product Portfolio
Trinseo continues to invest in innovative technologies to support the infrastructure for sustainably advantaged materials and has dedicated 43% of its R&D toward building a circular economy. As a result of our efforts, in 2021, we increased our product portfolio sales of sustainably advantaged material to nearly 5%.
Trinseo continues to evaluate suppliers against policies and procedures such as the Supplier Code of Conduct and Corporate Procurement Policy, which are utilized in our evaluations for the Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) scorecards and as part of our supplier selection criteria. As part of our ongoing efforts to assess suppliers, we contracted Beroe, Inc. to analyze records related to financial checks, anti-corruption, sanctions and due diligence records, EcoVadis business sustainability ratings, and health and safety alerts to evaluate our suppliers based on compliance with Trinseo’s sustainability requirements.
Trinseo continues to strive to reduce the environmental footprint of our operations globally. In 2021, plants implemented programs to reduce freshwater use, including optimizing cooling tower blow down and increasing recycled water usage in recipes. Additionally, Trinseo made improvements to facilities in order to reduce pellet and flake loss. This included implementing better housekeeping in warehouse and loading areas and the installation of sieves in rain and process water drains, which helped our Company have no significant or reportable losses of plastic pellets or flakes into the environment.
Trinseo continues to develop strategies to help address energy, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and climate change as critical societal and environmental challenges. From 2020 to 2021, the Company was able to reduce GHG emissions intensity by 9% due, in part, todecreased use of coal power and employee-led projects. As part of our ongoing efforts to reduce GHG emissions, we began work to develop a strategy for Scope 3 emissions management.
Trinseo is committed to attracting and retaining passionate employees by meeting societal expectations to live out our values of safety, respect for people, and engagement. In 2021, we examined our workforce goals and realized we need to broaden our diversified recruitment strategy beyond gender to include ethnicity, veteran status, disability, and more. Additionally, we are working to establish effective and equitable learning and development strategies for the unique needs of both our manufacturing and office staff.
