United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Trinseo is committed to aligning our sustainability efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.

When we established our 2030 Sustainability Goals, we strategized our product portfolio goal with applications aligning with the SDGs because of the role we play in developing materials that are intrinsic to daily lives.

Our efforts focused on addressing the five SDGs below in accordance with their relevance to our business. As we continue to strive forward with all our goals, we will be expanding our alignment with the SDGs.

SDGs Alignment
The SDG help guide our sustainability journey by providing a roadmap that unifies our efforts with global initiatives.

As part of our decarbonization strategy, Trinseo continues to explore cleaner energy sources to power our innovation. In addition to the existing installed renewable energy capacity at our sites in Terneuzen, the Netherlands, and Tessenderlo, Belgium, we partnered with Finnish electricity supplier Helen Oy on the installation of 1,800 solar panel modules at our site in Hamina, Finland. This project is expected to offset approximately 20% of the site’s annual power consumption, which aligns to Trinseo’s climate change goal to increase its share of electricity from non-fossil sources from 5% to 30% by 2030.

This was the first project to result from our site-level energy assessments that were conducted at each of our global facilities to identify on-site renewable energy source opportunities. We anticipate more projects to come in 2025 and 2026 based on these assessments.

These efforts support SDG Target 7.2, which focuses on increasing the share of renewable energy in the global mix, and SDG Target 7.3, which aims to double the rate of improvement in energy efficiency.

Recycling and reuse are essential components of responsible production and consumption of plastics, and in 2024, we continued to advance innovative recycling technologies that have the potential to reshape the plastics value chain.

As of 2024, Trinseo can now support complementary mechanical, physical and chemical recycling. We recycle polystyrene, polycarbonate and ABS waste, while depolymerization enables the expansion of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) recycling. Additionally, Trinseo's recycler, Heathland B.V., remains key to the Company's mechanical recycling and waste collection processes.

Alongside our efforts to contribute to circularity, we also expanded our Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) calculations. This new tool provides cradle-to-gate PCF and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data for nearly 6,000 of our products, playing a pivotal role in supporting our customers in their transition to embrace more sustainably advantaged solutions. This technology allows us to not only compare the global warming potential between our virgin and sustainably advantaged solutions but also monitor trends in the carbon footprint of those solutions.

These efforts directly support SDG Target 12.4, which focuses on environmentally sound management of chemicals and waste, and SDG Target 12.5, which aims to reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.

At Trinseo, we are strengthening our decarbonization strategy by advancing Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions reductions and expanding our PCF and LCA data calculations.

Following the establishment of our Scope 3 baseline in 2023, we are now better equipped to analyze and manage these emissions. We received limited assurance after engaging ERM CVS, an independent third-party assurance provider, to have our 2023 Scope 3 Inventory verified.

We also continued making progress on Scope 2 GHG emissions reductions through green energy certificates and cleaner energy investments. In 2024, we continued to conduct feasibility studies across our global facilities to identify possible on-site renewable energy projects, which resulted in signed two power purchase agreements for new solar installations. Additionally, we installed solar panels at our Hamina, Finland, site, based on the results of the study conducted in 2023. We now have a total of four active on-site renewable energy sources, including our Polycarbonate Dissolution Pilot Facility in the Netherlands.

These efforts support SDG Target 13.2, which strives to integrate climate change measures into policies, strategies and planning.

Trinseo is committed to reducing marine pollution by advancing responsible plastic management and water conservation efforts. As a proud member of Operation Clean Sweep® (OCS) since 2014, we work to prevent plastic pellet, flake and powder loss. In 2024, our Tessenderlo, Belgium, site became the first Trinseo facility to achieve OCS certification, setting a new benchmark for our European operations as we work toward further certifications.

Beyond plastic waste prevention, we are reducing freshwater consumption, with a goal to decrease freshwater intake by 20% by 2030. Many of our sites use recycled water, condensate and collected rainwater to minimize freshwater intake from municipal and natural sources. In 2024, we also conducted Water Risk Assessment (WRA) to identify and mitigate risks like scarcity, pollution and regulatory challenges for responsible water management.

These efforts support SDG Target 14.1, which aims to prevent and reduce marine pollution of all kinds.

Trinseo continues to engage in strategic partnerships and industry collaborations to progress sustainable change. In 2024, we partnered with a leading global automotive supplier to collaborate on developing circular automotive interior materials. We also expanded our Let’s Do Recycling! Program (LDR!P) in Indonesia, working alongside government and industry stakeholders to improve polystyrene recycling efforts.

Beyond industry initiatives, our facilities remain actively involved in their local communities, participating in volunteer efforts and sustainability programs.

Through these collaborations, we are supporting SDG Target 17.17, which promotes effective public-private and civil society partnerships.
