Trinseo Discusses Trends and Innovations at 2015 Specialty Paper Symposium

BERWYN, Pa. - Tuesday, May 12, 2015

Trinseo (NYSE: TSE), the global materials company and manufacturer of plastics, latex and rubber, recently attended the 2015 Specialty Paper Symposium on April 9 – 10 in Guangzhou, China. The symposium was in line with Trinseo’s business strategy to grow the company’s board and specialty paper segments, which is aligned to the growth of China’s specialty paper market. The two day event was jointly organized by Trinseo, State Key Laboratory of Pulp and Papermaking, and South China University of Technology (SCUT). The organization committee included Trinseo employees Prof. Pekka Salminen, Arthas Yang, David Zhu, Phyllis Fong, and Peggy Sung.

Over 100 representatives, representing more than 40 companies, attended the symposium. The majority of the attendees were from the specialty paper segment but also included those from other product areas, including masking tape, wallpaper, photo paper, label paper, filter paper, etc. Other attendees included paper & board manufacturers interested in the specialty segment. Among the attendees were 10 representatives from Korea who represented paper manufacturers exploring the specialty paper market.

Seven distinguished speakers, including Prof. Pekka Salminen, Trinseo, Dr. Graham Moore, Smithers Pira, Dr. Jari Vartiainen, VTT, Prof. Gang Chen, SCUT, and three local industrial professionals delivered 12 presentations on a variety of topics. The presentation topics included: an overview of the global specialty paper industry, China’s specialty paper market, paper making equipment, coating application methods and emulsion polymers, intelligent and active packaging, barrier and functional coating, nano-cellulose and other functional chemicals, all of which are relevant to the specialty paper industry. Arthas Yang provided simultaneous translation throughout the symposium by.

James Ni, Latex Business Director, Trinseo, welcomed everyone at the gala dinner and during his speech, he further emphasized Trinseo’s commitment to the region by continuing to invest and provide innovative solutions to the specialty paper industry. He also mentioned Trinseo’s plan to start up a new reactor at the company’s Zhangjiagang plant. After his speech, Ni presented souvenirs to the speakers and SCUT to show appreciation for their generous support.

“It is exciting to see the dynamics of the market and the technology development in the specialty paper segment in Asia. There is a strong desire for technology advancement from specialty paper manufacturers, to be able to meet domestic needs and to compete in the global market,” said Prof. Pekka Salminen.

Arthas Yang added, “With an annual RMB five billion new investment to the specialty paper segment in China, as well as some paper and board manufactures transitioning into the specialty paper segment, increasing needs for specialty paper product development from customers are expected. Leveraging on our strong position in the specialty paper industry in Americas and Europe, together with our solid foundation in the paper and board industry, there is a good chance for us to strengthen our presence in the specialty paper market and grow the business.”
