Product Life Cycles and Safety

At Trinseo, we believe in and embrace transparency. We are fully committed to the safety of our products at every stage of the product life cycle, and communicating this information with our customers and stakeholders.

Product safety begins before the acquisition of raw materials and continues all the way through manufacturing, distribution, usage, and reuse or disposal.

The foundation of our product safety process involves identifying and understanding any potential hazards, exposures, or risks that may be associated with the products we purchase, manufacture, and bring to market. Trinseo also supports ongoing toxicological testing to increase our knowledge of potential chemical hazards.

Building on this foundation, we integrate information and best practices into a robust product safety program. Key elements of our product safety program include operational engineering for improved environmental, health, and safety (EH&S), EH&S training, industrial hygiene, product stewardship, occupational safety, emergency preparedness and response, security, community outreach and awareness, distribution and logistics, and third-party services.

Trinseo encourages suppliers and customers to join our efforts to collaborate, innovate, and elevate industrial practices and expectations to ensure chemical products are managed safely throughout their life cycles.

Trinseo’s Product Safety Process

  • Gather existing scientific information about the potential hazards of our products.
  • Determine likely levels of exposure by considering factors such as product composition, manufacturing practices, applications, etc.
  • Evaluate risks to human health and the environment.
  • Revisit the product safety process periodically to review best practices and identify and correct information gaps.
  • Manage and/or reduce risks accordingly.
  • Document conclusions for future reference and continued learning.


Through the development of eco-profiles, or life cycle analyses (LCAs), we are able to further enhance our understanding of the impact of our products and help downstream industries make well-informed product decisions. Eco-profile development involves collecting and analyzing data on every product, substance, or material of interest to determine the environmental impact, including factors such as energy and raw materials used, water consumption, emissions, and waste.
