Charging Into The Future

Government regulations and consumer demand, driven by a desire to reduce carbon emissions, have pushed automakers to develop plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles. A new study by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) forecasts that sales of electric vehicles (EVs) will hit 41 million by 2040, representing 35% of new light duty vehicle sales worldwide.1

To accommodate the energy needs of EVs, communities around the world will need new infrastructure, such as charging stations that are convenient and accessible. As a material supplier to the automotive and electrical industries, Trinseo is providing the materials needed to build EV charging stations to keep electric vehicles powered. 

Resins for charging stations require transparency and opacity in a wide range of colors, toughness to prevent tampering and resist impact, flame retardancy to assure safety, and durability to withstand extreme weather and temperatures as low as -60°C. 

Residential charging stations, that is, those located in private garages or carports, are designed for minimal exposure to harsh environmental conditions. Public charging stations, on the other hand, need to withstand much more aggressive conditions and require protection against vandalism, high impact performance, and weather resistance.
