The Technical Data Sheet Checks the Boxes. Does Your Acrylic Latex Supplier?

The Technical Data Sheet Checks the Boxes. Does Your Acrylic Latex Supplier

Four questions to consider when choosing a supplier that can support you from formulation development through commercial-scale production.

A technical data sheet is a valuable starting point when evaluating an acrylic latex. What it cannot reveal is how a supplier will respond when an application changes, a production trial uncovers an issue or an existing chemistry no longer meets evolving performance requirements.

Those situations are becoming increasingly common as manufacturers balance performance, processing efficiency, supply reliability and cost. As acrylic latex applications and performance requirements continue to evolve, formulators need suppliers that can bring together polymer expertise, application know-how and technical support. Trinseo’s growing acrylic latex portfolio supports applications spanning pressure-sensitive adhesives, tapes and labels, flooring adhesives, flexible packaging laminations, roof coatings, cementitious systems, sealants and grab adhesives.

Commercial solutions include LIGOS™ C 9375 for high-alkaline cementitious systems, LIGOS™ A 9201 for flexible flooring, and LIGOS™ A 9200 and LIGOS™ A 9202 for lamination applications. Trinseo continues to invest in expanding its acrylic latex portfolio, with additional solutions in development to address evolving customer and application needs.

Although the applications differ, the central question remains the same: What makes the right acrylic latex partner?

Four questions can help distinguish an acrylic latex supplier from a true technical partner.

1. Can the Supplier Solve Your Application Challenge?

Performance is the starting point. A more revealing question is whether the supplier can help define the application requirements and translate them into the right acrylic polymer and formulation.

Customers often begin with a performance objective rather than a fully defined technical specification. They may need stronger adhesion, faster bond development, better moisture tolerance, greater durability, improved optical clarity or compatibility with a new substrate, even if they have not yet established measurable development targets.

The right supplier helps bridge that gap. This support becomes especially important when customers are navigating new challenges. In packaging, for example, the growing focus on recyclability has prompted manufacturers to reconsider substrates, adhesives and package structures. A knowledgeable partner can help customers evaluate options, develop and test prototypes efficiently and reduce development risk before moving to production.

At Trinseo, the process begins with understanding the customer’s formulation, equipment, substrates, end-use requirements and commercial objectives. From there, our technical teams determine whether an existing acrylic latex is the right fit or whether the solution should be customized.

Trinseo applied this approach when developing an all-acrylic adhesive system based on LIGOS™ A 9202 for a flexible packaging converter seeking an alternative to its incumbent styrene-acrylic laminating adhesive. The customer needed to maintain adhesion, optical quality, converting efficiency and compatibility across selected polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films.

Through formulation refinement, performance validation and commercial-scale evaluation, Trinseo helped optimize adhesion buildup, final bond strength, wetting and substrate compatibility. The resulting system successfully moved from laboratory development to commercial production on two lines.

Application support should not end when a sample leaves the laboratory. An acrylic latex must perform in the customer’s formulation, on the customer’s equipment and in its intended end use. The question is not just, “Does this supplier have a product that meets my specification?” It is also, “Can this supplier help solve my next application challenge?”

2. Does the Solution Create Value, or Simply Compete on Price?

Price will always influence purchasing decisions, but it rarely tells the full story.

A higher-performing acrylic latex solution may allow manufacturers to reduce material usage, increase production speed, improve consistency, minimize waste or eliminate processing steps. It may also enable new applications that existing formulations cannot support. The true value of a solution should be evaluated across three factors:

  • Cost: What is the material’s contribution to the total formulation cost?
  • Performance: Does it deliver the required adhesion, durability, optical quality, weatherability or other end-use properties?
  • Efficiency: Can it improve throughput, reduce material usage or simplify production?

Trinseo’s LIGOS™ A 9202 collaboration with the flexible packaging converter illustrates this broader definition of value. During customer trials, the all-acrylic system achieved a bond strength of 1.5 N within 2.5 hours after lamination, maintained full production speed and produced approximately 50% lower haze than the incumbent benchmark. It also demonstrated stable processing across selected PE, PP and PET films.

The customer was evaluating the overall business value of the solution—not the chemistry alone.

The same principle applies across Trinseo’s acrylic latex portfolio. Whether developing pressure-sensitive adhesives, flooring adhesives, sealants, roof coatings or cementitious systems, the goal is to balance performance, processing efficiency and cost for the finished application, rather than optimize for one property in isolation.

3. Can the Supplier Support Your Business at Scale?

As manufacturers expand production across regions, they increasingly need suppliers that can do more than provide a product. They need partners capable of supporting formulation development, technical service and commercial production on a global scale while maintaining consistent quality from one site to the next.

Commercialization planning should begin alongside formulation development, particularly when products will be manufactured across multiple sites or regions. Even the best-performing chemistry creates limited value if it cannot be produced consistently at commercial scale or supplied where customers need it.

At Trinseo, our global manufacturing footprint is supported by regional technical expertise. Together, these capabilities help us to shorten supply lines, respond quickly during customer production trials and reduce supply chain risk, particularly for customers operating across multiple locations or expanding into new regions.

Trinseo has reinforced this global reach through continued investment in our laboratory and manufacturing facilities. With approximately 80 years of emulsion polymer experience, Trinseo offers the technical depth, development capabilities and production capacity to help customers move acrylic latex formulations from laboratory development to commercial scale with confidence, whether manufacturing in North America, Europe or Asia-Pacific.

4. What Will It Be Like to Work Together?

Technical capabilities, product performance and manufacturing assets can all be compared on paper. Partnership is harder to measure but is arguably one of the most important factors in determining the success of an acrylic latex development project.

Successful application development depends on more than polymer expertise. It requires open communication, technical curiosity and a willingness to solve problems together. Customers need a partner who listens, shares data openly, adapts as requirements evolve and remains engaged from the first formulation discussion through commercial production and beyond. That level of collaboration helps customers test more efficiently, avoid unnecessary development cycles, resolve scale-up challenges earlier and accelerate commercialization with greater confidence.

While customers may begin by evaluating products, they often remember how a supplier made the development process easier. The strongest partnerships are built not only on chemistry, but also on responsiveness, trust and a shared commitment to solving complex challenges.

That collaborative approach is how Trinseo works with its customers every day. Our customers work with real technical and commercial experts who understand their applications, respond to their questions and collaborate with them to solve complex challenges. With many businesses automating customer service interactions, direct access to knowledgeable people becomes even more valuable.

Look Beyond Today’s Specification to Tomorrow’s Challenges

A broad acrylic latex portfolio matters, but the true value of an acrylic platform lies in how effectively it helps solve customer challenges across applications. The right acrylic latex must meet today’s specifications. The right acrylic latex partner brings the expertise, collaboration and capabilities to help customers prepare for what comes next.

That’s the philosophy behind Trinseo’s growing all-acrylic latex portfolio: bringing together deep polymer expertise, global manufacturing capabilities, hands-on application development and reliable commercial support to help customers bring high-performing solutions to market with confidence.
