For specialty materials, consistent product performance depends on a resilient, high-quality raw-material supply chain. At Trinseo, teams across Engineering, R&D, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and Quality collaborated on an initiative to strengthen the security of supply for a critical mineral filler used in solid-surface materials—while continuing to meet strict appearance and performance requirements.
The work focused on aluminum trihydrate (ATH), a key ingredient in Trinseo’s engineered surfaces portfolio, including acrylic products for bath and hot tub applications and solid-surface materials for countertops and shower walls. Because ATH is essential to these formulations, even small differences in material characteristics can affect final product aesthetics, especially in light-colored designs.
Market dynamics and rising compliance expectations contributed to cost pressures and supply risk for ATH, reinforcing the need to diversify our ATH sourcing strategy. Trinseo launched a structured evaluation of alternative options, assessing potential suppliers against stringent technical specifications, including particle size distribution and color consistency.
The benchmarking work strengthened Trinseo’s position in supplier discussions and supported a pragmatic sourcing strategy that improved overall competitiveness while safeguarding product quality. The approach included qualifying alternate ATH grades for specific applications and defining where alternative grades could be introduced without affecting customer requirements.
To enable this strategy at scale, the Florence, USA, site implemented new handling and production practices to reliably manage multiple ATH grades. These measures included segregated storage and controlled production sequencing to reduce changeover risk and maintain color integrity across product runs.
Cross-functional teams collaborated closely to validate performance across both laboratory and production environments. Specialists in formulation, color analysis, manufacturing, and quality worked alongside supply chain and commercial stakeholders to identify suitable product families, define control plans, and build confidence through data-driven decisions.
A key element of the program was translating technical complexity into clear operational guidance and aligning teams on specifications, risk mitigations, and execution plans. This clarity accelerated implementation while safeguarding consistency for customers.
This initiative demonstrates how Trinseo combines technical rigor with collaborative execution to strengthen supply chain resilience and deliver reliable performance in demanding end-use applications.
By reinforcing security of supply, strengthening supplier partnerships, and innovating how materials are qualified and managed during production, Trinseo continues to support customers with dependable quality and responsive service.
The program was delivered by a cross-functional team spanning formulation development and testing, color analysis, scheduling, material and equipment supply, operations support, and quality.
