Trinseo + COMMUNITY: Trinseo Partners on Inauguration of Waste Management Center in City of Tegal, Indonesia

To coincide with Indonesia’s National Waste Awareness Day, the City of Tegal held the inauguration of the first municipal waste management center in Indonesia on February 24, 2021. Trinseo was pleased to be a co-organizer of the event, with Hanggara Sukandar, Senior Site Leader of Trinseo, Indonesia and Director of Sustainability Responsible Care®, Indonesia also performing the role of Consulting Director of Sustainability at the center.

Being the first municipal waste management center in Indonesia, the facility was equipped with a sizable polystyrene (PS) foam compacting machine in March 2020, followed by a waste predator machine capable of processing 20 tons of wet waste daily in early January. Both additions were part of a pilot program. Plastic waste collected from local communities is sent to the waste management center for sorting and processing. PS waste, due to its high recyclability value, will be separated, compressed and sent to the Kemasan Group, one of the founders of Trinseo’s Let’s Do Recycling! Program (LDRP), for recycling into recycled PS through mechanical recycling. The remaining plastic waste will be recycled as alternative energy.

Trinseo and the City of Tegal share a common goal of realizing a circular economy in Indonesia. We believe that with our concerted efforts throughout the value chain, circularity can be unlocked, and the ultimate goal of the City of Tegal to become a landfill-free city can be achieved.

Key government officials participated in the inauguration, including Muhammad Jumadi, Vice Mayor, Johardi, Regional Secretariat, and R. Resti Drijo Prihanto, Head of the Environmental Division. Many supporting organizations from the LDRP also took part, including The Indonesian Olefin, Aromatic and Plastic Industry Association, Indonesian Plastic Recycling Association, Indonesian Scavenger Association, and Responsible Care® Indonesia. 39 local and national media members attended as well.

"We are committed to managing waste through synergy with related stakeholders through this waste recycling program to achieve and drive a circular economy," said Johardi representing H. Dedy Yon Supriyono, the Mayor of the City of Tegal, at the inauguration.
