Trinseo Exhibits Innovative Long Glass Fiber Thermoplastics at SPE TPO Conference

Trinseo (NYSE: TSE), a global materials solutions provider and manufacturer of plastics, latex binders and synthetic rubber, will highlight its long glass fiber (LGF) thermoplastics at the 2019 SPE TPO Automotive Engineered Polyolefins Conference in Troy, Michigan, October 6-9. Trinseo’s LGF reinforced structural polymers, ENLITE™ PP LGF, allow for up to 20% savings in part weight and offer significant cost-saving potential when used as a metal alternative. ENLITE™ PP LGF solutions can replace aluminum or steel, enabling lightweight semi-structural parts — and even unpainted Class A surfaces where required.

In addition to exhibiting (Booth 44), Trinseo was selected to present at the conference. Dr. Tony Samurkas, Technical Service & Development Director Plastics, The Americas, will share the advantages of long glass fiber reinforced structural polymers in “Innovative Long Glass Fiber Thermoplastics.” Samurkas leads customer solution development using a wide range of plastics technologies.

The increasing requirements for reduced fuel consumption necessitate significant lightweighting in new vehicle designs while also reducing total component and system costs. A recent example of this is the proliferation of vehicle liftgate designs using long glass fiber polypropylene (PP LGF) and TPO to replace steel. Weight and cost are further reduced by having the PP LGF structural component be an aesthetic Class A show surface to the vehicle occupants, thus eliminating any secondary operations, such as painting.

These new designs require that the PP LGF has exceptionally consistent fiber dispersion and uniform mixing in the color-matched part — a new performance requirement compared to long-established PP LGF applications where part aesthetics were less critical. Recently developed ENLITE™ PP LGF grades from Trinseo have excellent fiber wet-out and dispersion, resulting in the achievement of consistent Class A aesthetics on semi-structural parts.
