Trinseo + COMMUNITY: Trinseo Zhangjiagang Preserves Chinese Traditional Knitting Handicraft and Nurtures Creativity

Giving back to the communities we serve is intrinsic to who Trinseo is as an organization. Trinseo Zhangjiagang (ZJG) started a CSR project in 2019, building a handicraft workshop named “Children’s Wisdom Knitting Workshop” for Zhangjiagang Gangqu Primary School, a local school. The project aims at providing a venue for school children to make and display handicrafts, to preserve this traditional handicraft and to nurture children’s creativity. Due to the pandemic, the project took a longer-than-expected time to finish and was finally completed at the end of 2020.

School children learned how to knit (such as Chinese knots), upcycle waste and make the waste into decorative, household items at the workshop. The project nurtures children’s creativity, builds new skills, and also passes on Chinese traditional art and culture to generations to come. Zhangjiagang Gangqu Primary School participated in an art competition with the art pieces created at the workshop and won the competition among 50 competing schools.

In late March, 2021, a few Trinseo representatives together with Luke Lee, then Site Leader of the Trinseo ZJG site, as well as some local government officials attended the opening ceremony of the workshop. The teachers, students and local government officials were all thrilled about Trinseo’s support and the children’s achievement.

“We are part of the community and very happy to work with Zhangjiagang Gangqu Primary School on such a meaningful project. Chinese traditional knitting techniques have such a long history, and we are glad to have it passed along to the next generation,” said Luke Lee.
