Driving sustainable mobility with functionalized S-SBR
Our forward-thinking team and proprietary functionalization technologies enable both superior performance and environmental advantages for the most demanding application requirements. The development of functionalized S-SBR (Solution-Styrene Butadiene Rubber) has been a key milestone in our synthetic rubber sustainability journey.
Trinseo’s functionalized S-SBR has been proven to reduce rolling resistance lab indicators by 50 percent without undue compromise to wet grip or wear resistance. If consumers fit tires that are produced using S-SBR to a vehicle, they can achieve 3-5 percent more fuel efficiency in the tires use phase, which accounts for 90 percent of total life-cycle emissions. This motivates us to constantly innovate and develop new grades of functionalized S-SBR.
Input equals output – our mass balance certification is true customer value
We received mass balance certification according to the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) standard for the synthetic rubber that we produce in Schkopau, Germany. The mass balance approach means that inputs of sustainable feedstock at the beginning of the value chain are attributed downstream.
Mass balance is one of our ways of taking action with regard to sustainability and increasing support for the bio- and circular economy through cost-effective scalability that derives from the involvement of large industrial players. This chain-of-custody model allows Trinseo customers to benefit directly: they can now credibly claim the use of Trinseo synthetic rubber based on renewable/recycled feedstock in their own products.

Our Synthetic Rubber team believes that close collaboration with the customer is essential to achieving full circularity and has engaged in several partnerships to help the performance tire market to achieve their goals to become at least 80 percent sustainable by 2045.One of these partnerships is with Tyre Recycling Solutions SA (TRS), a company focused on building profitable, sustainable, and global solutions for the collection, processing, and recycling of end-of-life tires. Our two organizations are joining forces and putting their technology and stakeholder networks to use to develop solutions that further drive circularity in synthetic rubber.
