How Trinseo Manufactures Bio-Attributed Materials Based on Mass Balance

Trinseo offers its flagship STYRON™ Polystyrene, MAGNUM™ ABS, and TYRIL™ SAN with renewable content, part of our portfolio of sustainably advantaged products as BIO products. Here's how we create our materials with renewable content based on Mass Balance.

Refining

First, renewable raw materials are purified and processed in a refinery producing Bio Feedstock.

Feedstock Cracking

We use a bio-waste conversion process called feedstock cracking to separate biomass into its monomer building blocks. Only chemicals needed in production of the end material are filtered off for utilization during production.

Manufacturing

We then manufacture a combination of bio-content and fossil-based material. The result is a risk-free, drop-in solution.

Customer

The material is sent to the customer for a variety of end markets.

Mass Balance

Throughout the process, we use the Mass Balance approach and certifications to track inputs and outputs when mixing sustainable and non-sustainable materials in a production process.
