Cultivating a Sustainable Workforce

By Jenn Steele, Director, People Strategy

Building a sustainable workforce is essential to the long-term success and relevance of today’s companies. With diversifying and building cultures of inclusion being prioritized more over the past year, the demand for diverse talent has been driven higher than ever before. In order to stand out in this global war for talent, companies must clearly articulate their value proposition to current and prospective talent. At Trinseo, we are transforming our business model and culture, so there is no better time to come on board and be a part of this process with us.

Establishing Company Culture

At Trinseo, we’re currently undergoing a company transformation — from a cyclical player to a sustainable solutions provider for our customers. In order to be successful, we are responsible not only for bringing ideas to our customers, but also listening to them and seeing challenges from their viewpoint to come up with solutions. This helps us to foster a culture that is inherently inclusive, values diversity, listens, and gives feedback openly.

It is our duty to prepare our employees and create a culture that empowers our employees to thrive and feel valued and supported, but that also translates externally to benefit our customers, value chain partners, and surrounding communities. As part of this transformational process, we have surveyed employees to learn about our cultural strengths as well as new ways for our culture to evolve to meet the demands of the future. By taking the time to listen and learn, we can foster a culture in which we all do better, together.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

A notable shift we saw this past year was a renewed focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in business and society at large. Companies around the world are prioritizing DEI efforts more than ever before and also making these efforts an intrinsic part of their core values and the way they conduct business. For Trinseo, an important part of our Values system has always been “Respect and Integrity”; it’s simply who we are at Trinseo. In 2021, our senior leaders made Diversity, Equity and Inclusion a company-wide priority. Executive leaders reflected on their talent and wrote goals for themselves around four key dimensions – culture, recruitment, development and retention.

We cannot continue to grow and succeed if we do not consider the diverse perspectives of our employees and leverage them. This has come into clear focus in light of our recent PMMA business acquisition, marking a major step in Trinseo’s transformation to become an advanced specialty and sustainable solutions provider. To maximize the value of this acquisition, we needed to ensure we were equipped to welcome our new coworkers and harness their diverse ideas. In fact, we are now conducting leadership interviews and employee focus groups to better understand how our two company cultures can come together as one.

From top to bottom, we have made building a sustainable workforce a priority of our People Strategy at Trinseo. We believe the future success of our business lies in our current and future talent pool, and we’re taking steps to realize that potential.
